JD Institute has launched House of JD, an eCommerce marketplace for design talent that connects students, alumni and other designers with consumers.

The launch is part of the Dalal family-led institution's effort to move design work beyond portfolios and exhibitions into retail sales. House of JD will cover fashion, interiors, textiles, art, objects and lifestyle products, featuring work from students, aspiring designers, emerging creatives and established talent.

The marketplace extends JD Institute's existing design education network into commerce. Founded in 1988, the group says it has built a network of more than 38 learning centres and over 45,000 design graduates.

That footprint gives the platform a built-in pool of potential sellers. Alumni have worked across fashion, interiors, jewellery and styling, while others have launched their own labels or collaborated with brands and studios in India and overseas.

Curated model

House of JD will not operate as an unrestricted marketplace. Designers, collections and products will be reviewed before being featured, with an advisory board helping assess collections as part of the curation process.

The aim is to keep the platform selective rather than crowded. The offering will be organised into five categories: hoJD Student, hoJD Next, hoJD Signature, hoJD Collective and hoJD Legendary.

These sections group participants from across the wider JD network, including students, alumni, faculty members and industry contributors. Alongside early-stage work, the marketplace will also carry established labels, premium brands and limited-edition collaborations.

The initiative addresses a wider challenge for young designers, whose work often stops at the presentation stage even after months of development. By putting products before consumers, the marketplace is intended to give designers practical exposure to selling, positioning and presenting their work in a commercial setting.

For buyers, the platform will focus on design-led products across personal style and home categories. It will also highlight the stories of the designers behind the products.

Path to market

Rinesh Dalal, director of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, outlined the reasoning behind the launch.

“India has no shortage of design talent. What is needed are more places for designers to start and take their work forward. House of JD creates that opportunity by giving designers a space to bring their work to a wider audience and develop it further. We aim to discover, curate and commercialise the work of the next generation of creative entrepreneurs, while creating a space where consumers can discover the people and ideas behind the work. We want designers to use this space to be original, be themselves and enjoy the process of learning and creating as they take their work forward,” Dalal said.

The platform forms part of a broader shift in how education groups are trying to stay involved in the professional journeys of their graduates. In this case, JD Institute is using its academic network and alumni base to create a route from student work to consumer sales.

That approach also places the organisation in a role beyond training, as it seeks to build a commercial channel tied to its own ecosystem. By combining education, industry links and an online marketplace, House of JD is intended to give designers a first point of entry into selling their work.

The marketplace brings together education, creativity, industry and commerce on a single platform, while offering access to products from new and established designers across several creative categories.
