Adobe wins two Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards

Adobe has been honoured with two Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards by the Television Academy, recognising its significant contributions to the television industry. The awards include the Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award and an award for the development of Adobe Substance 3D Painter.

The Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award recognises Adobe’s 40-year history of providing tools that have powered the creative workflows of editors, animators, visual effects artists, and many others within the industry. The company’s suite of tools includes Premiere Pro, After Effects, Substance 3D, Photoshop, Illustrator, Frame.io, and Acrobat, all of which have become mainstays in television and filmmaking.

The second Emmy Award recognised Adobe's development of Substance 3D Painter, a tool used to create visual effects and animations for thousands of television shows. The technology allows filmmakers to apply realistic textures and materials to 3D objects, from metallic surfaces to rough-hewn brickwork and lifelike skin textures on computer-generated characters. The Television Academy commended Painter for empowering artists to create lifelike textures that enrich on-screen visuals.

Sébastien Deguy, Vice President of 3D and Immersive at Adobe and creator of Substance 3D Painter, said, "We’ve entered the golden age of visual effects in television; the mind-blowing hyperrealism and visual depth of today’s series are unlike anything we’ve seen before. Among the notable professionals who have utilised Adobe’s tools are Kelly Lyon, ACE, and Bob Joyce, both of whom have received Emmy nominations for their work. Lyon, who edited "John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in L.A." and "Tig Notaro: Hello Again", praised Premiere Pro's transcription tool and Frame.io for enhancing her workflow. "Collaborators really liked being able to leave comments on the video timeline, so I would always know exactly what changes they wanted and where," she said.

Bob Joyce, nominated for his editing on "Albert Brooks: Defending My Life," similarly lauded Premiere Pro, stating, "The ability to use mixed formats, varied frame rates, and aspect ratios in the same sequence made Premiere Pro the best editing platform for the documentary."

The impact of Adobe’s tools is also evident in the work of DNEG, a leading visual effects and animation studio, which earned an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie for its work on "The Last of Us". The studio relied on Substance 3D to achieve a high level of realism in visual effects. "From the rusted metal of abandoned cars to the gritty, worn facades of dilapidated buildings, Substance 3D empowered us to achieve unparalleled realism," DNEG shared.

These awards are part of a wider recognition of Adobe's influence in the industry. The company’s Premiere Pro tool was recently honoured with the Hollywood Professional Association’s 2024 Engineering Excellence Award for its Enhance Speech feature and also received a 2023 Engineering Excellence Award for Text-Based Editing. Additionally, Substance 3D earned a Scientific and Technical Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2023.
