Amazon Web Services adds AI tools for live streams

Amazon Web Services has introduced four new AWS Elemental features for live video workflows, covering multiview streaming, AI-generated metadata and two advertising tools.

The rollout expands AWS's push into the infrastructure broadcasters and streaming platforms use to manage live sports, news and entertainment feeds. The changes span MediaPackage, Elemental Inference and MediaTailor, which distribute and monetise live streams.

One addition, MediaPackage Dynamic Multiview, is aimed at services that want to offer viewers several camera angles or multiple live feeds on one screen. AWS said it lets operators assemble different layouts from a single set of encoded sources and deliver them through HLS or DASH, avoiding the need to encode every viewing combination separately.

The approach is intended to reduce cost and complexity for streaming groups that have relied on tiled encoding, client-side compositing or server-side compositing systems. AWS said the output can reach more than 95% of consumer devices with one digital rights management key, without requiring a separate software development kit for each device.

AWS also launched Elemental Inference Contextual Metadata, which uses AI to analyse live video in real time. The tool identifies objects, actions, brands, on-screen text and sentiment, then outputs metadata through an API aligned with the Interactive Advertising Bureau content taxonomy and the Global Alliance for Responsible Media brand suitability categories, according to AWS.

That metadata can be used elsewhere in the workflow, including automated highlight clipping, content discovery, contextual advertising and moderation. The move reflects a broader shift across the streaming sector as platforms look for ways to automate tagging and recommendation systems without building separate machine learning stacks for each use case.

On the advertising side, AWS added MediaTailor Yield Optimization, designed to fill unsold advertising inventory with demand from Amazon Publisher Services. The feature works during server-side ad insertion, allowing publishers to replace unused ad slots or slate video with paid adverts inside the stream.

The service is available at launch to APS streaming TV publishers, AWS said. Publishers can set price floors and category rules, while the system filters demand to avoid placing competing advertisers in the same break.

The fourth addition, MediaTailor Low-Latency Ad Insertion, extends personalised ad insertion to low-latency streams using Apple's HLS interstitials. It addresses a longstanding issue for live streaming operators, which have often had to choose between keeping streams close to real time and preserving the ability to insert targeted adverts.

Viewer choice

Live sports is one of the clearest targets for the new tools, particularly the multiview function. Streaming services are under pressure to give subscribers more control over how they watch events while keeping distribution costs in check as audiences grow.

AWS provided one customer example from India's streaming market.

"AWS Elemental MediaPackage Multiview lets us deliver multiple synchronized camera angles within a single stream, putting our subscribers in control of how they experience live sports. The server-side composition approach scales this premium experience to over 100 million viewers without multiplying origin complexity or CDN costs, giving us a true differentiator in India's competitive OTT landscape," said Akash Saxena, CTO, JioHotstar.

AWS said operators using server-side compositing vendors can spend between USD $2 million and USD $12 million a year on infrastructure alone. It added that compressed-domain compositing in Dynamic Multiview can cut costs by as much as 97% compared with systems that require a separate video stream for every layout.

Ad pressure

The two MediaTailor additions point to the growing importance of ad-supported streaming models, especially for sports and other premium live events where audiences expect broadcast-style reliability. For publishers, the commercial challenge is not only to sell inventory but also to avoid leaving gaps in breaks and keep adverts in step with fast-moving low-latency streams.

AWS cited a deployment tied to football coverage as an example.

"Our team set out to monetize low-latency streaming without giving up the latency itself, which had not been done on our platform before. Through DSPORTS's coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, we held six seconds glass-to-glass with ads running across every match, built on AWS Elemental MediaTailor and Amazon CloudFront," said da Silva.

The four additions are designed to work together within the same video pipeline rather than as separate products, AWS said. In practice, that means metadata created by Elemental Inference can be used to improve ad decisioning in MediaTailor, while Dynamic Multiview can support different viewing formats on the same underlying stream.

AWS said the services run within the same AWS Elemental environment used for millions of live streams globally, with a 99.9% service level agreement and without requiring customers to add new vendors.
